If you have been researching Medicare Supplement insurance, one plan keeps coming up at the top of every list: Medigap Plan G. Since Plans C and F closed to new enrollees in 2020, Plan G has become the most comprehensive Medigap option available.

But what exactly does Part G Medicare cover? Who is it best for? And is it worth the premium? This guide answers every question you need.

New to Medigap? Start with our complete beginners guide to Medicare Supplement plans.

What Is Medigap Plan G?

Plan G is one of 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans. It works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to cover out-of-pocket costs Medicare does not pay. Every Plan G policy offers the exact same benefits regardless of which insurance company sells it — the only differences are premium price and carrier reputation.

What Does Plan G Cover?

Plan G covers virtually everything Original Medicare leaves behind:

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs — up to 365 additional days
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment — the 20% you normally owe
  • First three pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance — days 21-100
  • Part A deductible — $1,676 in 2025
  • Part B excess charges — up to 15% above Medicare-approved amounts
  • Foreign travel emergency — 80% coverage outside the U.S.

The One Gap in Plan G

Plan G covers everything except the annual Part B deductible ($240 in 2025). Once you pay that, you have virtually zero out-of-pocket costs for Medicare-covered services the rest of the year.

What Plan G Does Not Include

  • Prescription drugs — you need a separate Medicare Part D plan
  • Dental, vision, and hearing — standalone plans start around $32/month
  • Long-term or custodial care
  • Private-duty nursing

Who Is Plan G Best For?

Plan G is ideal if you want:

  • Maximum predictability — only cost is the $240 Part B deductible plus your monthly premium
  • Protection from surprise bills — including Part B excess charges
  • Freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, nationwide
  • Peace of mind for chronic conditions — no copays for visits or specialists

How Much Does Plan G Cost?

Premiums vary based on your age, location, carrier, tobacco use, and pricing method. As a general range, Plan G premiums run $100 to $300 per month for a 65-year-old, with a national average around $144/month.

High-Deductible Plan G

Some carriers offer a High-Deductible Plan G with lower premiums and a $2,870 annual deductible (2025). Once met, coverage works exactly like standard Plan G.

Plan G vs. Other Popular Plans

Plan G vs. Plan N

Plan N has lower premiums but includes copays ($20 office visits, $50 ER without admission) and does not cover Part B excess charges. Read our detailed Plan N vs. Plan G comparison.

Plan G vs. Plan F

Plan F covers the Part B deductible that Plan G does not — but is only available to those Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020.

How to Enroll

The best time is your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the 6-month window starting the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this period: no medical underwriting, no health questions, guaranteed acceptance.
