What Is Medigap? Your Complete Guide to Medicare Supplement Insurance

Original Medicare was never designed to cover everything. Medigap — also called Medicare Supplement insurance — fills those gaps. Questions? Call 1-888-781-6026.

What Is Medigap?

Medigap is private health insurance that supplements Original Medicare. It pays for gaps including: Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, Part B coinsurance, the Part A deductible ($1,676 in 2025), skilled nursing facility coinsurance, Part B excess charges, and foreign travel emergency care.

How Does Medigap Work?

  1. You receive care from any Medicare-accepted provider in the US
  2. Medicare pays its portion first (typically 80%)
  3. Your Medigap plan pays its portion of the remaining costs
  4. You may owe little to nothing depending on your plan

You can see any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare — no networks, no referrals.

What Medigap Does NOT Cover

  • Prescription drugs (need a separate Part D plan)
  • Dental, vision, or hearing care
  • Long-term care

When to Enroll

Your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts when you turn 65 and enroll in Part B. Insurers must sell you any plan at the best available rate — no health questions. Outside this window, medical underwriting applies.

How Much Does Medigap Cost?

  • Plan G: $130-$200+/month depending on state and carrier
  • Plan N: $100-$160+/month depending on state and carrier

Since plan benefits are identical across insurers, finding the lowest price is everything. We compare multiple carriers for you — free.
